A campaign aimed at encouraging every family to raise chickens ,has been launched in Rwanda , in order to fight against malnutrition and stunting in children, where research has shown that eating eggs is one of the ways to make children grow well and prevent stunting.
Kwizera Olivier, an employee of the “Orora Wihaze project” responsible for the project’s campaign, says that eggs contain 11 types of nutrients ,that help children grow mentally , phycaly and that there are many infants who have reached the period of nutrition support without getting eggs which is worrying.
“Only 22% of the infants who reached the time are taking complete nutrition, but those who consume eggs are less than 7% . There is still a lot of work to do, the reason why we encourage people to eat meals that contain animal products including chicken or eggs.
The administration of Gatumba Sector along with partners in fighting malnutrition, stunting and improving hygiene, have launched a continuous campaign to encourage every family to raise chickens, so as to reach the level of feeding a child one egg once a day.
The Executive Secretary of Gatumba Sector, Mukamana Soline, says that the proteins needed by the body, about 6% of all are found in eggs, the reason behind they have started to raise awareness among the youth about the importance of raising chickens that provide eggs .
“We want every home and village to have chickens so that the children can get eggs in the program aimed at fighting malnutrition among children, as was often seen in Ngororero District, especially in Gatumba Sector” She said.
In order to continue the campaign of raising chickens for every family and eat an egg for every child, 15 families in the Gatumba sector were given five chickens each, that will help their children eat eggs and even more eggs will be available for sell as well .
Eggs help children grow mentally and physically.
