Sylvestre Mudacumura, the FDLR militia leader wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity, was killed today in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, rwandatribune.com has learnt.
He was shot dead by special force unit from Congolese army (FARDC) under operation dubbed ‘Zakola 2’ that looks to eradicate negative forces operating on the country’s territory.
Mudacumura killed together with some of his subordinates who include Col Serge, his secretary and Major Gaspard his chief escort, according to our sources.
Mudacumura was the overall commander of the military wing of the rebel Democratic Forces for the liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) known as the Forces Combattants Abacunguzi (FOCA).
He was born in 1954 in Gisenyi, Rwanda.
Mudacumura is charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC) with nine counts of war crimes in the Kivu provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The FDLR militia is listed as a terrorist organisation.
Over 10,000 FDLR combatants have voluntarily returned home to Rwanda over the years.
Congolese army has early Wednesday confirmed the death of Mudacumura via their Twitter account.
