40 men have committed suicide in Burundi over the past two years following gender-based violence. The report is drawn up by the “Men in Distress” Association which deplores the neglect of this offense both at the administrative and judicial levels.
At least 40 men have committed suicide following the gender-based violence they suffered over the past two years in Burundi. The “Men in Distress” Association, which takes stock, denounces the weakness, if not the inertia, of justice and the administration in the face of violence committed against men in Burundian society.
According to the Hommes Distress association, since October 2021, this association has recorded 334 cases of men victims of gender-base violence, and counted 40 men who committed suicide during this period following this violence.
Thus, the said association regrets the fact that administrative and judicial officials do not take into account gender-based violence against men. Another considerable challenge, Burundian law is silent on gender-based violence among men.
According to the latest statistics from the ministry responsible for gender issues, during the year 2021, at least 14,926 people including 2,372 men were victims of gender-based violence in Burundi.
