Italian ambassador was Killed, Locals cast their ballots for the FDLR rebels, led by Gen. Ntawunguka Pacifique Omega
The death of Luca Attanasio, confirmed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. According to Le Figaro, an Italian ambassador to the DRC was killed in the eastern part of the country near the city of Goma in a car crash.
“Ambassador Luca Attanasio died at the hospital after his car was shot down by gunmen and he was shot in the abdomen,” announced
The vehicle was believed to belong to the UN Food and Drug Administration (PAM), while others killed in the attack, including an Italian police officer and his driver, were also killed in the attack.
“The Italian government is working hard to find out the truth about this death,” said Federico D’Incá, Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Parliament.
The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a police recruiting center at Virunga National Park, police said.
A local civil society official who spoke to Rwandatribune said the area had been under siege for days by FDLR fighters and members of Gen. Dominique’s Mai Mai Nyatura, eyewitnesses said.
Virunga Park Guards reported that the Gunmen were planned to kidnap Ambassador and his delegation for money. The 17 FDLR fighters led by Lt. Ndayizeye Yvon, one of Col. Ruhinda’s deputies were the ones who ambushed the Envoy”, Virunga Park guards.
Ambassodor Luca Attanasio, 43, has been ambassador to Congo since December 2019. He was killed on Monday, February 22, 2021.
