The mandate of the United Nations mission for the stabilization of DRC, “MONUSCO”, is effectively expiring .
A MONUSCO disengagement agreement has just been signed between Kinshasa and the UN. The ceremony was held this Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
The DRC was represented by its head of diplomacy, Christophe Lutundula and the UN by the representative of its secretary general in the DRC, Bintou Keita.
The end of collaboration after more than two decades between MONUSCO and the DRC ,responds to a persistent call from the Congolese Government, for more than 5 years, for the withdrawal of this UN force whose effectiveness on the ground has remained mixed according to certain observers.
The disengagement was precipitated mainly by anti-MONUSCO demonstrations, intensified in recent months by the population in eastern DRC, where this UN mission has the greatest concentration of its personnel.
